Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
The upgrade to an item allows players to increase the level of their equippable items like weapons, armor and trinkets over a certain threshold. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.
Slots are used to upgrade components into equipment to gain attributes and bonuses, as well as other effects. The majority of these upgrades are slot-restricted but some are universal.

There are some weapons that have high trade value even though they are not upgraded because they provide useful stats (e.g. Whistan's Shield is a great shield for FB Sorcs. There are also some exclusive and set items that don't require upgrading due to their inherently low requirements or benefits from upgrading (e.g. Naj's Puzzler staff, Goldwrap).
Some sets have set bonuses that can offer additional effects when Link wears the entire set. These bonuses are helpful in certain situations, like when exploring the Gerudo Desert or in a dark dungeon. The Desert Voe set, for instance, has the Stealth Up effect that makes it easier to escape the attention of enemies.
There are also universal upgrades that can be fitted into any kind of equipment. These upgrades provide fewer rewards than the ones that are restricted to certain types, but are easier to obtain. Some of these upgrades are gems which can be crafted in the jeweler's workshop, and can be utilized in any trinket slot. item upgrade are only placed in weapon accessories and offer a small amount of bonus without increasing damage.
Requirements

Costs

Upgrade components can be put into armor, weapons, and trinkets. They can also be connected to tools for gathering. The majority of upgrade components can be replaced by an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. These are salvageable using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.
Based on the type of item, upgrading it could cost Dilithium or gold. In addition, some upgrades require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests needed to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum level for upgrades. Upgrading to the highest upgrade level can be costly especially when you're upgrading PvE gear.
Upgrades can also modify a weapon's ammunition, or damage die size. They can also change the special characteristics of a weapon like its heavy or operational property, or its hand requirement. Certain upgrades can even alter a weapon's appearance.
